The Truth: If pop has indeed eaten itself then The Death Of Pop are here to administer the last rites while having sneaky kick through the still-warm ashes. In essence the seasiders’ brand new 'Bubble Bath' EP takes the spirit of the shoegaze era and adds a classic melodic shimmer which means that there are ripples of Ride combining with the buoyancy of The Beatles, which in turn means at times The Death Of Pop sound like ELO if they'd signed to Creation Records. Kind of.

Lead-off track and single 'Rayban Party' (Released 22nd June) is especially potent, it being one minute and 48 seconds of manic jingle-jangling angles and tumbling vocals. Fact is we'd have bought this single in the Ugly Child record shop in Walthamstow in 1988, and we would have been right. But don't take our word for it, take the words of the band itself here:

"Following on from last year's critically acclaimed 'Fifths' EP (Art Is Hard) The Death Of Pop present 'Bubble Bath', an EP which continues in the same DIY vein that has become synonymous with the band. The EP was recorded, produced and mastered by The Death Of Pop in the same Bournemouth bedroom as all previous releases. With this set of songs they have continued to explore their shoegaze and post-punk influences but have also taken a turn towards late '60s baroque and sunshine pop as well as the Paisley Underground sound of the mid-'80s.

"'Rayban Party' is probably the shortest song we've written as a band. Taken literally it's a jovial message about losing a pair of sunglasses and needing to go out in the sun, but there is a darker and more ambiguous message in there..."

Come smell that supercool ambiguity at this show here:
