ALBERT GOLD is (still) a sweet, sweet soul man from Hackney, East Londonshire and 'Handcuffs' is his third gently thrilling single release. 'Handcuffs' will be unleashed at a launch party at Servant Jazz Quarters on Thursday September 24th. And yes, Albert Gold really is Albert Gold's real name. The first single was ‘Feel Safe’ in 2014, a release which was so enigmatically low-key Albert didn’t even appear in his own video. The second single was 'Into The Wild' from earlier this year, where conversely Albert appeared in virtually every frame of a video shot at the Felixstowe seaside for £250 and a bag of chips. Such is complex life with Albert Gold, a man who says he "can only write songs when I'm angry", and a man who has - alongside guitarist Matthew ‘Mafro’ Waters, who provides the Foo Fighters homage on 'Handcuffs' - been spreading his stardust across London this year with gigs for London In Stereo, The Fix, Blackjack Ldn and Sofar Sounds alongside the likes of Stay Bless, Max Marshall, Broken Hands and labelmates Longfellow. Indeed, his most recent show was a BBC Introducing showcase at the Lexington, this after terrific radio support from Gary Crowley and Huw Stephens on Radio One for 'Into The Wild'. An alumni of the British Academy Of New Music in downtown Stratford (alongside Ed Sheeran and Rita Ora) Albert Gold has taken his sweet, sweet time before finally finding a musical style which is just the right, tight fit for his expansive voice. That style is multi-faceted synth-laden soulpop which, as ‘Handcuffs' proves, is as hooky as it is fluid and as radio-friendly as it is cool, as you may expect from an artist who has drawn comparisons with Luther Vandross and Frank Ocean, often in the same summery breath. Throw in a soupcon of Shalamar, shake and prepare to be stirred. Albert has spent parts of the past year co-writing shiny diamond pop hits in a series of sessions with Sacha ‘Wrecking Ball’ Skarbek in Kensaltown Studios, and there are more shiny pop-tastic co-writes to come. Before then, Mr Gold unlocks ‘Handcuffs’ with a special headline show in the wilds of East Londonshire, like this:
